| Q: | How big is your family? |
| Q: | So have you lived in Japan? |
| Q: | Is Japanese hard to learn? |
| A: | Learning to SPEAK Japanese is relatively easy. Learning to READ and WRITE Japanese is an entirely different matter. While the grammatical structure of Japanese is quite different than English (actually very similar to German), the pronunciation is actually quite easy -- resembling a simplified version of the romance languages (Spanish, Italian, Latin, etc.). Reading and writing involves learning thousands of Chinese "Kanji" characters, in addition to the two native Japanese alphabets. Learning just one or two of the three types of writing doesn't really get you anywhere, because (outside of children's books) the three are always intermingled. × close |
